In the spirit of classic kindergarten storytelling, Kate Lebo invites you to sit cross-legged on the floor and listen to her read from A Commonplace Book of Pie, her collection of real and imagined facts about everyone’s favorite dessert.

Kate’s no artist but she makes a damn good pie, so instead of pictures, she’ll use homemade pie to illustrate the book. Napkins and forks will be provided, but bring your own beverage. Kate suggests hot black coffee.

“Thriving thru the Winter: A Pacific Northwest Handguide” is a zine created with the purpose of providing inspiration, advice, and ideas about how to get through the notoriously long, dark winters of the Pacific Northwest. Originally conceived of by Nora Hughes, she and Amy Gibson have planned and assembled it, gathering work by more than 50 writers and designers. “Thriving Thru the Winter” contains over a hundred pages of content, including full color art pieces by local artists.
When Hughes and Gibson first started asking for submissions, there was an overwhelming response to this topic among Bellingham folks, and people as far away as New York and Los Angeles, who have spent time in Bellingham, mailed in pieces. After the long process of assembling and collecting submissions, the zine was divided into several categories: Advice, Lists, Recipes, Writing, Art, and Poetry.
“Thriving Thru the Winter” will also include a CD compilation put together by two local musicians with original cover art; a pre-stamped handmade linoleum block print postcard; a handmade canvas patch; and a postcard with information about a local wintertime art show. The cover of each zine will be a limited edition silk screen print designed by Cameron Jennings.
It wouldn’t have been possible to make “Thriving Thru the Winter” without a lot of help from friends: Cameron Jennings did a lot of design work; Zach Zinn helped with printing and layout; Bison Bookbinding helped with paper ordering; Patrick Gay burned all the CDs; and Scott Rickey provided materials and assistance in silkscreening the covers. We think the final product is exactly what we hoped it would be: a lot of different voices, all sharing the unique and inspiring ways they make it through the winter.
